Firearm manufacturers usually start with a popular product and then expand their line. This is the case with the Tread series by SIG Sauer. The Tread series was first introduced in 2018 and has been very successful. Although the 5.56 NATO-chambered AR-15-type firearms are the most popular, some AR users desire or require the larger 7.62 NATO round for better performance.
The 716i is a semi-automatic rifle that uses direct gas impingement, similar to the .223-caliber rifles. It has a carbine-length gas system with an H2 buffer, which makes for reliable function, minimal muzzle rise, and tolerable recoil.
The most noticeable feature of the 716i is the cutouts in the bolt carrier. There are six evenly spaced recesses measuring 1" by 1/4" that reduce weight and could capture debris. There are also larger cutouts on the front right and front left. The carrier group weighs around one pound and contains a staked bolt key, eight-lug bolt, and dual plunger-type ejectors. The latter launches spent cases well to the right and rear of the shooter, making it easy to clean up the brass.
The 716i is chambered in 7.62 NATO (.308 Win.) and has a 16" ferritic nitrocarburizing (FNC) steel barrel with 1:10"-twist rifling. The twist rate will adequately stabilize all but the heaviest, most streamlined bullets. The barrel's abbreviated length is great for maneuverability and portability, but shooters should expect velocities to fall short of published numbers, which are usually based on 24" barrels. The muzzle is threaded in the standard 5/8x24 TPI pattern and includes a muzzle brake.
The upper receiver is made of aluminum alloy and has an ejection port cover, shell deflector, forward assist, and a 15" free-floating aluminum handguard. The rifle does not come with sights, but the CNC-machined handguard has cutouts for cooling and aesthetics and five sets of seven M-Lok mounting points for accessories. The upper receiver also has a 22.5" uninterrupted Picatinny rail for attaching an optic.
The lower receiver is also made of aluminum and has a beveled magazine well for faster magazine changes. The rifle comes with a single black Magpul PMAG 20 LR/SR Gen M3 magazine. There are bilateral attachment points on the lower for a single-point sling. The polymer pistol grip has ribs on the front and backstrap, aggressive texturing on the sides, and a removable cap for storage space. The fire controls include bilateral magazine-release buttons and two-position safeties, but only a left-side bolt catch.
The rifle has a polished, hard-coated, single-stage trigger that broke at an average of 6 lbs., 2 oz. The trigger had virtually no creep or overtravel, and the reset was short. The 716i comes with a six-position, telescoping Magpul SL-K buttstock that can fit most shooters since it has an extended position of 37 1/2", a length of pull of 14 7/8", and a collapsed position of 34 3/8" with a length of pull of 11 3/4".
