Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Originally focused on design instead of manufacture, the ArmaLite Company employed a young man with a talent for weapons design. Proving his abilities to the company's founder, George Sullivan, Eugene Stoner, a young man in his thirties, was quickly promoted to the position of Chief Design Engineer. Soon after in 1954, ArmaLite Co. introduced the Air Force's requested survival rifle known as the AR-5, or MA-1, and cemented it's reputation as a worthy firearms designer. In 1955, the U.S. Army began trials to replace the M1 Garand as it's fighting rifle. Because the old faithful battle rifle held only eight rounds and weighed over ten and a half pounds, they sought to lighten the load in both rifle and ammunition weight for battlefront soldiers. Unfortunately, because ArmaLite came late to the game with the new AR-10 prototype, they were eventually bested by the militaries time constraints. There just wasn't enough time to finish testing the already formidable rifle, and the contract went to Springfield for the new T44, or as it's better known, the M-14 rifle. Years passed, battles were fought, designs were sold, and in 1961, Eugene Stoner left his position at ArmaLite for a new consulting position at Colt. That same year, the U.S. Air Force commissioned 8,500 units of a new design for testing, and the AR-15, also known by it's military designation of M-16 was born.
When General Curtis LeMay became the Air Force Chief of Staff in 1961, he placed 80,000 AR-15's on order, catapulting the new rifle into it's eventual, well-deserved position as the U.S. Military's standard rifle. Through trial and error, the AR-15 answered the call for a new, lightweight, reliable, accurate, and durable implement of war, as well as becoming the most popular civilian sporting rifle in history, a position it holds to this day.
