Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this stunning muzzleloading single-shot rifle today for a penny-start auction, this is the Access Heritage French Fur Trade Musket!

-According to the owner, he purchased this rifle from the Access Heritage Putting History In Your Hands website and it remains in unfired condition-

According to the Access Heritage Putting History In Your Hands website, they sell historically accurate muskets and pistols in a non-firing state for demonstration purposes. This allows them to comply with various local, state, national, and international firearms regulations, along with shipping company policy restrictions. However, a certified gunsmith can simply turn it into a firing state just by drilling a touch hole.

(This example features a properly drilled touch hole, which turned into a fully functional reproduction.)

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Manufactured at the Tulle arsenal in France at the close of the 17th century, the fusil de chasse quickly gained popularity among the inhabitants of New France, especially those involved in the fur trade. These muskets were widely used throughout the 18th century. France's Indigenous allies were swiftly equipped with these .62 caliber "fusil de chasse" rifles, marking it as North America's first trade gun. Notably, during the 1704 raid on Deerfield by the Atiwan natives and French militia, this longarm was among the weapons used. The lock plate of these muskets features the older spelling of the arsenal as "TVLLE," with the "V" only changing to a "U" in 1745. Interestingly, some of the arms purchased by Benjamin Franklin from France for the American Revolution bore the "TVLLE" marking, indicating their manufacture predating 1745. The fusil de chasse saw significant service during the War of the Austrian Succession (King George's War) and the French and Indian War. The success of the militia and their Indigenous allies at the onset of the Seven Years War was remarkable. After the fall of New France in 1760, French voyageurs continued westward, discovering new routes and tribes to trade with, always accompanied by their trusted Tulle hunting muskets. Following 1760, when the British introduced their own American Indian trade gun, it closely resembled the French model in caliber and appearance.

However, the distinctive "cow's foot" buttstock of the French fusil was omitted. Nevertheless, Access Heritage offers historically accurate reproductions of the Tulle fusil de chasse, widely known as the 'French Fur Trade Musket.' These modern replicas are carefully crafted with a high level of historical fidelity, closely matching the original firearms in dimensions, materials, and styling. The company also incorporates a specialized hardening process in the lock mechanism to enhance durability and ensure reliable performance. Access Heritage’s reproductions provide collectors, historians, and reenactors with a rare opportunity to engage with a formative chapter in colonial and Indigenous history through an authentically recreated example of one of its most iconic tools.
