Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The .44 Auto Mag pistol (AMP) is a semi-automatic pistol that uses a large caliber. It was designed by the Auto Mag Corporation between 1966 and 1971 to make a .44 AMP chambered semi-automatic pistol. The pistol has gained popularity due to its reputation and looks, making it a hit in cinema and novels. The ATF lists several pistol versions as "Curios and Relics."
In 1970, the Auto Mag Corporation's president, Harry Sanford, opened a factory in Pasadena, California. The factory shipped its first pistol on August 8, 1971. However, the company declared bankruptcy on May 3, 1972, after producing fewer than 3,000 pistols. The company opened and closed several times from 1973 through 1982 under various names, including TDE (Trade Deed Estates), OMC, Thomas Oil Company, High Standard, and AMT (Arcadia Machine & Tool).
During this period, an additional 6,000 pistols were produced and sold, bringing the total number of pistols produced to approximately 9,000. After Harry Sanford's death in 1996, his son Walter continued selling spare parts online through automagparts.com. The production guns were made in .44 AMP, while experimental pistols were made in .45 ACP, .30 AMP, .357 AMP, and .41 JMP. Changing calibers typically only required exchanging the barrel since the frame, magazine, and bolt could be used with all calibers except .45 ACP. Between 1971 and 2000, the Auto Mag underwent eleven different name changes.
