The AMT AutoMag II is a semi-automatic handgun chambered in .22 WMR (Winchester Magnum Rimfire), produced by Arcadia Machine and Tool (AMT) from 1987 until 1999, and currently manufactured by High Standard. One of the key challenges in designing a semi-automatic .22 WMR handgun was addressing extraction issues. The .22 WMR cartridge uses slow-burning rifle powder that creates a late peak pressure, which can cause the case mouth to expand and jam in the chamber when fired from a handgun. AMT overcame this problem by drilling 18 holes at 90 degrees to the chamber. A sleeve was then welded over the chamber, allowing excess gas to escape between the holes, relieving pressure enough to prevent the case from sticking. The AutoMag II features a stainless steel slide with a large cutout over the barrel, similar to the design of the Beretta M9. This cutout helps with cooling and the ejection of spent brass, although it may primarily serve to reduce the moving mass of the slide for smoother blowback operation. The all-stainless steel construction ensures durability and makes rust a non-issue.
