The AMT Automag II is a semi-automatic handgun chambered in .22 WMR. Originally manufactured by Arcadia Machine and Tool from 1987 to 1999, it is now produced by High Standard. Designing a self-loading handgun for the .22 WMR cartridge posed several engineering challenges, particularly related to extraction. The .22 WMR uses a slow-burning rifle powder that reaches its peak pressure later in the firing cycle. When fired from a handgun, this delayed pressure spike can cause the case mouth to expand and become lodged in the chamber. To solve this issue, AMT implemented an innovative solution: they drilled 18 small holes at 90 degrees to the chamber and welded a sleeve over them. This design allowed excess gas to escape from the first set of holes and flow rearward to the second set, relieving enough pressure to prevent the case from sticking.

The Automag II also features a stainless steel slide with a prominent cutout over the barrel, similar to that of the Beretta M9, which improves cooling and facilitates the ejection of spent casings. More critically, the cutout reduces the slide’s mass, making blowback operation more feasible. The handgun’s all-stainless steel construction also ensures excellent resistance to rust and corrosion.
