Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The AMT Automag V is the final and largest member of the Automag pistol family, produced by Arcadia Machine & Tool in the early 1990s. Designed to chamber the powerful .50 Action Express cartridge, it was introduced in 1993 and built until around 1995. Mechanically, it operates on a short-recoil, locked-breech system and is configured as a single-action semi-automatic pistol. To help manage the recoil of the .50 AE, the Automag V features a 6.5-inch barrel with integral compensator ports, which reduce muzzle rise and improve controllability. Its all-stainless-steel construction gives it exceptional durability and a distinct, heavy profile that contributes to stability during firing. The pistol was closely related to the Automag IV, sharing the same frame design while being re-engineered to handle the larger .50 AE round. While AMT initially planned for a production run of several thousand pistols, far fewer were ultimately manufactured, resulting in limited availability and making it one of the rarest Automag models. The Automag V retained the bold styling and oversized proportions that characterized the series, but with an added sense of finality as the largest-caliber Automag ever built. Its limited run and specialized design ensure that it remains a standout in the history of semi-automatic handguns. Collectors and firearms enthusiasts often regard the Automag V as both an engineering statement and a cultural icon. It embodied the fascination with large-bore semi-automatic pistols of the 1990s, standing alongside other heavy-hitting handguns like the Desert Eagle. While its size, weight, and recoil limited its practicality as a defensive or field sidearm, the Automag V found its place as a firearm for those who valued raw power, craftsmanship, and exclusivity. Today, it remains a prized collectible, remembered as the final evolution of Harry Sanford’s Automag vision and a true .50-caliber powerhouse.
