Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The antique Belgium-made side-by-side shotgun marked “Henry Arms Co.” is believed to be a trade brand name used by the Henri Pieper firm—an influential 19th-century arms manufacturer based in Liège, Belgium. Henri Pieper was a prominent gunmaker known for producing a wide array of firearms, including military rifles, revolvers, and high-quality sporting arms, often for export to the American market. The use of trade names like “Henry Arms Co.” was a common practice at the time, allowing European manufacturers to appeal to American buyers by adopting Anglo-sounding brand names. These shotguns were typically made to a solid standard and imported by various U.S. distributors or mail-order houses around the turn of the century. Most examples were produced in the black powder era, and as such, they are considered black powder firearms unless otherwise marked for smokeless use. Crafted in the traditional side-by-side configuration, these shotguns usually feature external hammers, fine damascus or twist steel barrels, and modest engraving, with walnut stocks that vary in finish and grade depending on the intended market tier. The gun’s action was often of the boxlock or sidelock type and was built with the ruggedness expected of the period’s utilitarian hunting firearms. Collectors today value these shotguns not just for their craftsmanship and period aesthetics, but also for their historical connection to the broader world of transatlantic arms trade. However, due to their age and black powder heritage, any surviving examples should be closely inspected by a qualified gunsmith before use. Many remain as wall-hangers or display pieces, while others are appreciated for their old-world artistry and representation of Belgian gunmaking excellence during the late 19th century.
