Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Hawken rifle is a type of muzzle-loading rifle that was commonly used on the prairies and in the Rocky Mountains during the early days of the frontier in the United States. Its development began in the 1820s and it quickly became known as the "plains rifle", the buffalo gun, and the fur trapper's gun. However, after the Civil War, it was gradually replaced by newer breechloaders such as the Sharps rifle and lever-action rifles.
The Hawken rifle was created and sold by Jacob and Samuel Hawken who were trained by their father as rifle smiths on the East Coast. In the early days of the Rocky Mountain fur trade, the brothers moved to St. Louis, Missouri, and opened a gun shop in 1815. They designed the "Rocky Mountain Rifle" to cater to the needs of fur trappers, traders, and explorers. The rifle was of high quality, lightweight for easy carriage, and could bring down large animals from long distances.
