Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Astra Model 600/43 has a fascinating and complex history, particularly in its relationship with Germany during World War II. After the fall of France, the Wehrmacht faced a critical shortage of sidearms, leading to the purchase of foreign-made weapons, including Astra’s pistols from Guernica. Astra initially produced the Model 300 and Model 400 for the Germans, but logistical challenges arose due to the Model 400’s chambering in 9 mm Largo, which was not standard for German forces. In response to feedback, Astra redesigned the Model 400 to accept the more common 9 mm Luger cartridge. This updated version, the Model 600/43, featured several enhancements, such as a button magazine release and improved safety mechanisms. Although production began in May 1944, it was abruptly cut short due to the Allied invasion of Normandy. Only 10,500 units were delivered before the German occupation in southern France ended. The pistols can be identified by the "WaA/D20" acceptance mark, and despite the limited number produced during the war, they are now regarded as collectible items due to their unique historical context. Post-war, the Model 600/43 found a second life, with various countries purchasing it, including West Germany, which adopted it for use in 1951. This ironic twist highlights the Model 600/43’s enduring legacy, connecting its production directly to both wartime necessity and the eventual rearming of post-war Germany. As a piece of history, it represents a unique chapter in firearms production and military logistics during a tumultuous period.
