Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Thompson submachine gun (also known as the "TommyGun," "Chicago Typewriter," "Chicago Piano," “Trench Sweeper,” or "Trench Broom") is a blowback-operated, air-cooled, magazine-fed selective-fire submachine gun invented by the United States Army Brigadier general John T. Thompson in 1918. It was originally designed to break the stalemate of trench warfare of World War I but was not finished until after the war ended. The weapon was also sold to the general public. Because it could be obtained so easily, the Thompson became notorious during the Prohibition era as the signature weapon of various organized crime syndicates in the United States in the 1920s. It was a common sight in the media at the time and was used by both law enforcement officers and criminals.
The Thompson was widely adopted by the U.S. armed forces during World War II and was also used extensively by other Allied troops during the war. Its main models were designated as the M1928A1, M1, and M1A1 during this time. More than 1.5 million Thompson submachine guns were produced during World War II. The "Chicago Typewriter" submachine gun has been a popular choice for collectors and shooting enthusiasts for over a century. The Thompson 1927A-1 model, chambered in .45 ACP caliber, features a pinned Cutts compensator that extends the barrel length to 18 inches, resulting in an overall length of 41 inches from buttstock to muzzle. The Tommy Gun is available with a blued steel receiver (T1 models) or a lighter aluminum receiver (T5 models) and has a blade front and adjustable rear sight. The fixed stock is made of polished American Walnut and has a vertical foregrip. The Thompson T1-14 model has a barrel length of 16.5 inches, making it 1.5 inches shorter than the T1 model with an 18-inch barrel. The BATFE has approved the permanently affixed Cutts compensator as part of the 16.5-inch barrel. The pinned Cutts compensator on the 18-inch barrel models is not considered part of the barrel.
