Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Batavia Leader was a lower-priced sidelock double-barrel shotgun produced under the Batavia line by the Baker Gun & Forging Company of Batavia, New York, in the early 20th century, with early examples commonly encountered with twist barrels. After Baker Gun & Forging sold its gun-making business to H. & D. Folsom Arms Co. in 1919, the Batavia Leader name was used by Folsom for a plain field-grade shotgun fitted with fluid steel barrels. Folsom-era Baker guns are widely identified by collectors through the presence of an “F” in the serial number, and the model appears in Folsom catalogs during the late 1920s, after which Baker guns no longer appear. Because no Folsom production records are known to survive, modern understanding of production dates and characteristics of the Batavia Leader is based on surviving examples, period catalogs, and long-standing collector research, rather than factory documentation.
