Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Beretta Model 1934 is a compact, semi-automatic pistol manufactured in Italy. It was introduced as the standard service pistol of the Royal Italian Army in 1934 and issued to officers, NCOs, and machine gun crews. It fires the 9mm Corto, commonly known as the .380 ACP. Armi Beretta SpA, based in Gardone Val Trompia, has a rich history of manufacturing firearms since 1526. Originally, they specialized in making barrels, but in response to the military's demands during World War I, they began producing pistols. Their first pistol, the model 1915, was created in 1915. Today, Beretta is one of the largest pistol manufacturers in the world. During World War II, their most popular product was the model 1934 (M1934).
In the early 1930s, the Italian Army was interested in the Walther PP pistol. Beretta, a firearms manufacturer, didn't want to lose significant military contracts with their German competitor. To comBeretta, they designed a new one called M1934, which was specifically built for the Italian armed forces. The Italian Army accepted this model in 1937. Later, Beretta introduced the M1935, which was very similar to the M1934, except that it fired a .32 ACP (7.65 mm Browning) cartridge. During the Fascist Era, pistols were marked with their year of manufacture in two forms: the conventional Julian date in Arabic numerals and the date in the Fascist Era in Roman numerals.
The Fascist calendar began on October 28, 1922, so a pistol from 1937 may carry either "XV" or "XVI" as its Fascist year. If the armed forces took the pistols, they usually exhibited acceptance marks stamped into the frame on the left, just above the grip. For the Army, the stamp is "RE" (Regio Esercito); for the Navy, it's "RM" (Regia Marina); or for the Air Force, "RA" (Regia Aeronautica). These stamps are always in the form of an Eagle wearing a Royal Crown for the Royal Air Force. Police pistols may be marked "PS" (Pubblica Sicurezza).
The Romanian military, an Axis power at the time, also purchased model 1934 (and 1935) pistols. The caliber marking appears as 9 mm Scurt (short in Romanian) rather than 9 mm Corto. Romanian Army M1934s differ from Italian M1934s in that the Romanian pistols use the Russian sight picture, while the Italian pistols use the standard sight picture used by Western armies.
During the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948, Nathuram Godse used a pistol with the serial number 606824. This pistol, manufactured in 1934, was previously used by an officer during Italy's invasion of Abyssinia. Later, a British officer took it as a war trophy. The pistol's origin in India is unclear, but Godse acquired the unlicensed firearm from a co-conspirator.
