The Beretta 686 is a single-triggered double-barreled shotgun. Like some other shotguns, the 686 has auto-ejectors; this allows the shells to be ejected automatically when the weapon is "broken" into two, as opposed to most shotguns having only extractors which cause the shells to pop out a little bit when the weapon is "broken" into two. Trigger transfer to the second barrel is done via a recoil-driven inertia mechanism, although early production guns did so mechanically. The Beretta 686 has interchangeable chokes. The weapon has wooden furniture and has ventilated ribs placed above the barrels. A rubber buttplate is placed at the rear of the stock to absorb some recoil. The 686 is available in four different calibers, has a tang-mounted safety, barrel selector, has cold hammer-forged barrels and is also available with engravings.
