Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Beretta's primary focus until the 19th century was manufacturing high-quality military and civilian barrels. These barrels were then paired with components produced by other contractors and gunsmiths. However, under the leadership of Giuseppe Beretta, the company began producing complete firearms. Despite the increasing popularity of automatic pistols, it wasn't until World War I and Giuseppe's son, Pietro Beretta, that the company produced its first self-loading gun.
In 1903, Pietro took over the company and expanded its manufacturing facilities in Brescia, Italy. With the help of Tullio Marengoni's innovative designs, the product line was also expanded. When Italy joined the Allies against Germany in 1915, they needed more arms to supply their growing military force.
At the onset of the Great War in 1914, the Italian military's standard-issued handgun was the Glisenti semiauto of 1910. This design had some flaws and used a 9x19mm cartridge of similar dimensions to Germany's 9mm Parabellum. However, due to its weak action, it was only 75% effective. Additionally, significant quantities of the 10.35mm Type I and Type II Model 1889 Bodeo double-action revolvers were in use. As it was recognized that the available quantities or immediate production capacity would not be sufficient to meet the demand, other arms were also put into service. This included Spanish autos and a new pistol designed mainly by Marengoni, the Beretta Model 1915.
In 1919, the Model 1915 underwent some improvements which included a longer cutout on the top of the slide and a different method of attaching the barrel to the frame. This upgraded version of the gun was commercially available and was renamed the Model 1919. Apart from the safety catch, the Model 1919 was also equipped with a grip safety.
