In 1955, Beretta introduced its S-series OU shotguns, which included three models: the S55 (Silver Snipe), the S56 (Golden Snipe), and the S57 (Ruby Snipe). These shotguns combined the premium features of Beretta’s handmade ASEs and sidelock S1s with cost-effective mass-production techniques. During their time, the Beretta S55, S56, and S57 were in competition with OUs like the Browning Superposed. However, these Beretta models weighed less and were less expensive compared to Browning's shotgun, resulting in successful sales for the S-line of OUs.
