Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The vz. 24 rifle is a bolt-action carbine designed and produced in Czechoslovakia from 1924 to 1942. It was developed from the German Mauser Gewehr 98 line, featuring a similar bolt design. The vz. 24 was created in the aftermath of World War I to replace the vz. 98/22, a Czech variant of the Gewehr 98. It featured a 590 mm (23.2 in) barrel, which was shorter and considered more manageable than the 740 mm (29.1 in) barrel of the Gewehr 98. The vz. 24 was chambered in 7.92×57mm Mauser, like its predecessors. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the Romanian Army adopted the vz. 24 as its standard infantry rifle. However, by the time Romania entered World War II in 1941, it had not acquired enough vz. 24 rifles to fully arm its troops. The first orders for the vz. 24 rifles were placed in 1938, following the rising tensions in Europe. Romanian contract vz. 24s feature a two-letter prefix at the start of the serial number; the first letter is variable, while the second is "R" to designate Romania. Each initial letter denotes manufacturing blocks of 25,000 rifles.

Romanian vz. 24s with prefixes "AR", "BR", "CR", through "YR" correspond to different manufacturing periods, though several prefixes such as "IR", "JR", "KR", "MR", "NR", "QR", "VR", and "ZR" have not been reported. Throughout the contract, Czechoslovakia produced between 400,000 and 750,000 vz. 24 rifles for Romania. The first two years of production included royal crests for the King of Romania; however, rifles produced from 1940 onward typically do not feature these crests, and many surviving early models have had their crests ground off. By mid-1943, the Romanian Army had received approximately 445,640 vz. 24 rifles.
