Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In the early spring of 1900, John M. Browning knew he had created a revolutionary shotgun. But it's doubtful he could have forecast its impact on the development of sporting guns over the following seven decades.
First manufactured in 1903 by Fabrique Nationale, Liege, Belgium, the Browning Automatic shotgun was an instant success. The first 10,000 distributed to America were sold in a year. In 1905 Remington Arms Company was licensed to manufacture and sell it, and in time many other manufacturers including Savage, Franchi, and Breda were producing it with no variation in basic design. So perfected and dependable was this shotgun that no other successful auto loading shotgun of different designs appeared until nearly half a century after its introduction. Browning Arms Company's current production model, the Automatic-5, is offered in 12, 16 and 20 gauge and 12 and 20 gauge 3" magnum-73 different specifications in all. And while combine production figures cannot even be estimated, Browning Arms Company, alone, passed the 2 million sales mark in 1970!
Browning Arms Company has paused in production of the famous gun to craft a limited, special edition of the Automatic-. These Commemorative Automatic-5's are a tribute to the inventive genius of John M. Browning and a gesture of gratitude to 2 million American sportsmen-who have been its best salesman.
ONLY 2500 Browning Commemorative Automatic-5s have been crafted. Each is serially numbered 2,000,000-1 to 2,000,000-2500 and features precise and painstaking hand-craftsmanship appropriate to its historical significance. The serial number, plus John M. Browning's profile and personal signature, have been expertly engraved in 24 carat gold. A brilliantly polished and hand-checkered stock of finely figured walnut and the contrasting richness of mirror-polished and deeply blued metal surfaces add dignity and permanence to the beauty of this shotgun.
