Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Fabrique Nationale .22 Pump Action Repeater, affectionately nicknamed “The Trombone,” is a classic small-caliber rifle designed by the legendary firearms engineer John M. Browning and manufactured by FN Herstal in Belgium. Introduced in the 1920s, this sleek pump-action rifle quickly earned a reputation for its elegant design and smooth operation. Chambered for .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle, it features a tubular magazine and takedown design, making it both versatile and convenient for transport or storage. The nickname “Trombone” comes from its distinctive slide-action mechanism, which resembles the movement of a trombone slide. With its finely blued steel finish and nicely figured walnut stock, the rifle blends traditional aesthetics with precise craftsmanship, embodying FN’s commitment to quality.

Highly regarded for its reliability and accuracy, the FN Trombone became a popular choice for plinking, small game hunting, and target shooting throughout Europe and beyond. Its lightweight frame and fast-cycling action make it enjoyable for shooters of all ages and skill levels. The rifle’s compact build and excellent balance contribute to its ease of handling, while the exposed hammer and simple open sights offer a straightforward shooting experience. Despite its discontinuation decades ago, the Trombone has retained a loyal following among collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate its historic lineage, Browning's influence, and enduring mechanical design. Today, well-preserved examples are increasingly sought after for their combination of function, form, and nostalgic charm.
