The CETME rifle lineage traces back to the innovations of German engineer Ludwig Vorgrimler, who drew inspiration from the StG 45 and the AME 49. In response to restrictions on importing select-fire weapons, Century Arms has created a civilian-friendly version, the CETME Sporter, which is constructed from a mix of military surplus and U.S.-made components. While earlier models featured cast aluminum receivers, subsequent iterations transitioned to stamped and welded steel for enhanced durability. Additionally, to comply with various state laws regarding assault weapon features, earlier models came with a permanently pinned muzzle brake, but post-2004 production saw the introduction of removable brakes, reinstating the original design's flash-hiding capability. The rifle employs a delayed roller lock system that not only contributes to its reliability but also ensures a vigorous extraction and ejection process, propelling spent casings well away from the shooter.
