The Chinese/ARMCO (often confused with ARMSCOR) SKS is a variant of the widely recognized Simonov-designed semi-automatic rifle, produced in China and imported into the United States primarily during the 1980s and early 1990s. Among the lesser-known importers was ARMCO, based in Boylston, Massachusetts, not to be confused with ARMSCOR of the Philippines. ARMCO, owned and operated by Stephen A. Holmquist, was both a firearms retail operation and an importer/exporter. The company imported a number of Chinese SKS rifles and AK-pattern firearms, many of which bear distinctive import stamps. However, ARMCO’s legacy is tainted by legal controversy; Holmquist was arrested in October 1991 and later convicted on November 5, 1992, on six counts of importing firearms using false statements and three counts of illegally exporting restricted firearms to China. Despite this, Chinese SKS rifles brought in by ARMCO remain collectible for their import history, traditional construction, chrome-lined barrels, folding bayonets, and chambering in the reliable 7.62x39mm cartridge.
