Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Model 1861 Navy cap & ball .36-caliber revolver was a six-shot, single-action percussion revolver manufactured by Colt's Manufacturing Company from 1861 until 1873. It featured the innovative "creeping" or ratchet loading lever and a round barrel similar to that of the .44-caliber Army Model of 1860 but with a slightly shorter barrel measuring 7.5 inches. This model was designed for naval and military use, reflecting its popularity during the American Civil War. In total, approximately 38,000 units were produced, making it a notable firearm of its time. A limited number of Model 1861 Navy revolvers were converted or manufactured as cartridge revolvers in the mid-1870s using a mix of percussion revolver parts on hand and newly fabricated components. Approximately 2,200 of these revolvers were manufactured around the mid-1870s as cartridge revolvers using percussion parts on hand and newly fabricated cartridge revolver components. They are generally numbered in the 100-3300 range.
