Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Colt’s Second Generation black powder reproduction of the legendary 1860 Army revolver remained in production until 1982, with several notable variations introduced during its run. The standard model, featuring a rebated cylinder, was manufactured from November 1978 through November 1982. In its final year, Colt also released a limited run with an electroless nickel finish. A distinctive fluted-cylinder variant was offered between July 1980 and October 1981, while a rare stainless steel version was produced from January to April 1982. Building on this success, Colt expanded the black powder series with the 1862 Pocket Navy in December 1979 and the 1862 Pocket Police in January 1980. These compact revolvers served as scaled-down counterparts to the 1851 Navy and 1860 Army, respectively. The Pocket Police is recognized by its rebated, semi-fluted cylinder, round barrel, and creeping loading lever—mirroring the 1860 Army’s design.

In contrast, the Pocket Navy featured an octagonal barrel, a rebated round cylinder engraved with the classic stagecoach holdup scene, and a hinged loading lever. Production of the Pocket Navy continued through November 1981, while the Pocket Police concluded in September of that same year. Serial numbering patterns can aid identification: Pocket Navy revolvers typically fall within the even-thousands, while Pocket Police examples tend to use odd-thousands.
