Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Fourth Model Derringer, introduced during the height of America’s fascination with Old West nostalgia, stands as a unique blend of tradition and modern marketing. Based on Colt’s earlier single-shot derringers from the late 19th century, the Fourth Model carried forward the simple, tip-up barrel design while adapting it to the .22 Short rimfire cartridge. Produced under contract by Butler of New Haven, Connecticut, this model was designed to capitalize on the popularity of derringers seen in television westerns of the 1950s and 1960s. Like its predecessors, it was loaded by placing the hammer on half-cock and pivoting the barrel to the side, which also ejected the spent case. The construction reflected its era, with Zamak (zinc alloy) frames finished in nickel, gold plate, or occasionally black Du-Lite, paired with walnut or imitation pearl and ivory grips. While not intended as a serious defensive sidearm, it served as both a functional single-shot pistol and a collectible novelty that evoked Colt’s frontier-era designs. Serial number data provides valuable insight into the production history of the Colt Fourth Model Derringer. Those with a “D” suffix were manufactured between 1959 and 1963, with total production estimated at approximately 89,727 units, making them the more common variation. Guns marked with the “N” suffix were produced between 1960 and 1963 in smaller numbers, with only about 22,880 examples manufactured. This relatively limited run, combined with their nostalgic appeal and distinctive finishes, makes both suffix series desirable among collectors today, with the “N” suffix models being scarcer and therefore often commanding a premium. Taken together, the Colt Fourth Model Derringer represents both a continuation of Colt’s earliest cartridge-handgun legacy and a mid-20th-century effort to capture the enduring romance of the Old West in a compact, affordable firearm.
