The Colt M45A1 is a modernized evolution of the classic M1911A1, designed to meet the demanding standards of the U.S. Marine Corps. Adopted in 2012 under a contract for up to 12,000 pistols, with an initial order of 4,036 units, it was issued to Force Reconnaissance companies, MARSOC, and Special Reaction Teams. This variant features a dual recoil spring system that softens the felt recoil of the .45 ACP cartridge, providing greater control and longevity of the pistol. Other enhancements include a 5-inch National Match barrel for improved accuracy, ambidextrous safety, an accessory rail for tactical attachments, and a rugged desert sand Cerakote finish. Outfitted with 3-dot Trijicon Noval night sights and G10 desert camo grips, the M45A1 was purpose-built for reliability, precision, and durability in combat environments. Although MARSOC transitioned to the Glock 19 in 2016 for logistical reasons, many Marine units, including Force Recon, continued to field the M45A1, highlighting its proven performance and trusted design. Civilian and military versions of the pistol no longer carry the “USMC” rollmark, instead being marked “COLT M45A1,” and modern production models feature a darker flat dark earth Decobond finish that prioritizes durability over corrosion resistance. Combining the heritage of the 1911 platform with updated components suited for modern warfare, the Colt M45A1 remains both a formidable combat sidearm and a highly sought-after collector’s piece.
