The Colt XS series, which preceded the XSE series, was a brief but ambitious attempt by Colt to create a high-performance pistol to compete with brands like Kimber. Introduced between 1997 and 2000, the XS series incorporated patented design elements from C-More's Ira Kay, who had previously worked on the FBI SWAT pistol project. During this time, Colt operated as Colt Competition and collaborated with C-More on optics and parts, even supporting the development of the M26 MASS shotgun system. The XS series was intended to modernize Colt’s offerings, but its timing coincided with the company's decision, under President General William Keys, to scale back civilian products in response to rising municipal lawsuits against the gun industry. Colt's pivot to focus on military and collector firearms led to gun owner backlash, which later shifted to Smith & Wesson following the company's controversial agreement with the Clinton Administration. The XS series partnership with C-More quickly ended, and Colt reverted to using its own parts, such as the 1991-style sights and duckbill safety, renaming the revamped pistols as the XSE series.
