Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
During the early 20th century, Colt's Manufacturing Company sold a highly popular line of small pocket pistols designed by John Browning, most notably the Colt Model 1908 Vest Pocket Hammerless. This striker-fired, .25 ACP blowback-operated pistol featured a grip safety and a six-round magazine, with over 420,000 units produced between 1908 and 1948. After World War II, Colt briefly resumed production of the 1908 model using remaining pre-war parts, assembling around 1,150 to 1,200 additional units between 1945 and 1948. However, the American market became increasingly saturated with inexpensive imported pistols from Europe, particularly Spain, making domestic production of a new design economically unfeasible. Instead, Colt partnered with the Spanish firm Astra-Unceta y Cía. to produce a new pocket pistol, introduced in 1957 as the Colt Junior. This compact, hammer-fired, blowback pistol was chambered in .25 ACP and also offered in .22 Short, featuring a six-round magazine, manual thumb safety, and a European-style push-button magazine release on the left grip panel, but lacking the grip safety of the earlier 1908 model.

Production began in 1958 and continued until the 1968 Gun Control Act halted the importation of non-sporting firearms, cutting off the supply of the Spanish-made Juniors. In response, Colt arranged for Firearms Import & Export (FIE), a Florida-based company, to import parts from Astra and assemble the pistols in the U.S., resuming production from 1970 to 1972. Spanish-manufactured pistols bear a "CC" serial number suffix, while U.S.-assembled models have an "OD" prefix. Colt discontinued the Junior in 1973, but FIE continued to sell the pistol under the name "The Best" into the 1980s.
