Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Colt released the LE6920 model in 1998. This firearm is very similar to the standard M4 that is used by the US military. The only differences are the barrel length, which is 16.1 inches instead of 14.5 inches, and the absence of the burst/auto fire control options.
The rifle's barrel measures 16.1 inches and comes with a standard A2-style muzzle brake/compensator. It has a mil-spec 1/7-inch twist chrome-lined barrel that has undergone proof testing using a 70,000-psi proof cartridge and magnetic particle inspection to check for any stress fractures. The 16.1-inch barrel is ideal for carbine length and provides optimal performance with a wide variety of 5.56x45mm (.223 Rem) ammunition. The barrel also has an M4-style step in the front of the front sight assembly to attach a grenade launcher for law enforcement use with tear gas, smoke, and less-than-lethal ammunition. The front sight assembly is M4 spec (marked F on the left side of the front sight assembly) and sits higher than the standard front sight assembly to properly align the sights with the higher rear sight caused by the flat top upper receiver. The carbine has a side-mounted sling swivel attached to the barrel that comes from the factory on the left side but can be switched to the right.
The LE6920 comes equipped with a standard issue double heat shielded M4-type handguard that provides better protection to the shooter's hand from the heat of the barrel. However, you also have the option to install the standard carbine handguards or even more advanced rail systems such as the A.R.M.S., Inc. SIR (Selective Integrated Rail) System. The Colt M4 comes with a standard upper receiver that has a Mil-Std-1913 rail flat top. Both the receiver and the barrel extension feature extended feed ramps, which improve feeding reliability. The upper receiver is equipped with a detachable carrying handle that has a fully adjustable A2-style rear sight assembly. However, you can easily replace it with any other backup rear sight. The Mil-Std-1913 rail allows you to attach any optics of your choice to the carbine.
The carbine with plate number LE6920 uses a mil-spec M4 bolt that undergoes a test firing with a 70,000 psi-proof cartridge. After that, it is inspected for stress through magnetic particle inspection. The extractor is equipped with an M4 heavy black buffer and a stronger extractor spring that enhances its reliability and lifespan. This also increases the extraction force and makes the carbine more reliable. Starting from February 2005, all LE6920s will be equipped with the standard selective fire bolt carrier. This change is considered an improvement for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the extra mass of the carrier increases the firearm's reliability under adverse conditions. Secondly, the hammer and firing pin are protected, which reduces wear and tear. With the previous version of the bolt carrier, the hammer notch on top of the hammer would damage the firing pin, causing visible wear on the bottom of the bolt carrier over time.
The lower receiver of the gun has a mil-spec four-position telescopic buttstock with a longer butt in its current configuration. The sling swivel is located on the bottom. Although the buffer extension can accommodate any of the aftermarket stocks, the lower receiver uses Colt's proprietary .170-inch oversize hammer and trigger pins. These pins are designed to prevent illegal conversion to fully automatic mode.
