Colt New Frontier Revolver -The legend of Colt continues in the New Frontier, Single Action Army. From 1890 to 1989, Colt manufactured a variation of the venerable Single Action Army with a uniquely different profile. The “Flattop Target Model” was fitted with an adjustable leaf rear sight and a blade front sight. Colt has taken this concept several steps further to bring shooters a reintroduction of a Colt classic. The New Frontier has that sleek flattop design with a rear sight that is adjustable for windage and elevation along with a target ready ramp front sight.
In 1960, John Kennedy was elected president and it looked like a new era had arrived, and in fact, people called that time the “New Frontier.” To celebrate this new era of good feeling and looking toward the future, Colt decided to upgrade the Single Action Army and call it the New Frontier. The mainframe was given a heavy flattop and fitted with an adjustable rear sight, matched up with a ramp front sight. The frame, including the new flattop, was beautifully case colored as only Colt could do, and the balance was finished in what Colt called Royal Blue at the time.
In 1978, when the New Frontier went back into production with the 3rd Generation Colt Single Action Army...serial numbers began at 01001NF, using five digits instead of four. In the last, and according to Colt, final run of New Frontiers, calibers were .45 Colt, .357 Magnum, .44 Special and .44-40. All the 2nd Generation New Frontiers were standardized with a finish of bright blue except for the case-hardened frame. The 3rd Generation New Frontiers can be found in full blue and nickel finishes, including nickel-plated Buntline New Frontiers in .45 Colt, .44 Special and .44-40. The .44-40 was available in the short barrel length of 43/4″, but I do not believe any .44 Specials were offered in this length.
