Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt New Frontier first appeared in 1961, beginning with serial number 3000NF, which remained at the Colt factory. Production continued through 1974, ending in the 72XXNF range, resulting in just over 4,000 units produced during this 2nd Generation run. These Flat-Top Target models were offered in four calibers: .45 Colt, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, and .44 Special. According to Colt historian Don Wilkerson, the .38 Special is the rarest among them, followed by the .44 Special. Additionally, fewer than 100 .45 Colt New Frontier Buntline models were manufactured, making them particularly scarce and desirable to collectors.

In 1978, Colt reintroduced the New Frontier as part of the 3rd Generation Single Action Army line. This new series started with serial number 01001NF, now using five-digit numbering. The final run of New Frontiers included chamberings in .45 Colt, .357 Magnum, .44 Special, and .44-40. While all 2nd Generation models featured a standard bright blue finish with a case-hardened frame, the 3rd Generation offered more variety, including full blue and nickel finishes. Notably, nickel-plated Buntline versions were available in .45 Colt, .44 Special, and .44-40. The .44-40 variant was offered in a shorter 4 3/4" barrel length, though available data suggests that the .44 Special may not have been produced in this configuration.
