Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Manufactured in the mid-1970s, the Colt Pony is one of the rarest production pistols in the company’s history, with only 47 to 57 examples ever produced. Its origins trace back to leftover parts and tooling from the Colt Cub project, which were acquired and utilized by Firearms International Corp. (F.I.C.) to manufacture components for this compact .380 ACP pistol. These parts were sent to Colt for final fitting and assembly under Colt’s supervision, as the pistol was originally intended to be part of Colt’s re-entry into the small-caliber pocket pistol market. However, Colt abruptly scrapped the project before full production began. According to collectors and sources from the time, including the American Handgunner 1977 issue, Colt retained roughly 10 or 11 of the completed pistols for executive use, while the rest were returned to F.I.C. for commercial sale. Marked on the left slide with “COLT PONY / CALIBER .380 AUTOMATIC” and featuring the Rampant Colt logo, this sleek pistol is fitted with blade front and adjustable notch rear sights, checkered grips with Colt medallions, and a lanyard ring stud on the butt. It’s often found with its original wood grain factory box, properly labeled to match the serial number of the gun.

The Colt Pony story offers a fascinating insight into Colt’s brief flirtation with outsourcing and their internal struggle to meet market demand for a modern pocket pistol. As reported in American Handgunner ("Prize Pocket Pistol," 1977), excitement initially surrounded Colt’s announcement of a new .380 pocket model, with enthusiasts hoping for a revival of the classic 1908 Pocket Hammerless. That excitement faded when early images and samples revealed a pistol resembling the Spanish-made Star DK, which Colt admitted would be made “by someone else in this country for Colt, to Colt specifications.” After a two-year silence and an eventual announcement that the project had been dropped, nearly identical pistols began appearing marked as the “FI Model D” — some bearing serial prefixes like "CPA," believed to stand for "Colt Pony Auto." These guns entered the market quietly, with neither Colt nor FI offering much explanation, further deepening the mystery. Retrospectively, it’s clear that the FI Model D and the Colt Pony were essentially the same design, and the Colt Pony stands today as a tangible remnant of a shelved project—an ultra-rare collector's piece tied to a curious chapter in Colt’s production history.
