Captain Jack Dean was one of only 6 people to ever serve as both a Texas Ranger and U.S. Marshall. He was most well known for helping catch convicted killer Charles Harrelson, father of actor Woody Harrelson.
As a Ranger, Dean found himself first assigned to the Rio Grande Valley on the heels of the 1966-67 farm strikes that caused friction between migrant workers and law enforcement in the region. There he worked under a comparatively progressive new captain whose task was to rebuild relations with local residents and migrants, and train a new generation of Rangers on how to enforce the law in the post-Civil Rights movement era.
After four years as a field Ranger, Jack’s outstanding leadership abilities had been recognized by his superiors, and he was promoted to sergeant on December 1, 1974. He found himself as one of the sergeants of Company F. Company F is the only Ranger company that has two sergeants (lieutenants). One is stationed in Austin, the other at company headquarters in Waco. Jack’s station was Waco, and his captain was none other than his hero Bob Mitchell. He worked for Captain Mitchell until November 1, 1978, when he promoted to the captaincy of Company D in San Antonio. He held this position until his retirement on September 1, 1993. After his retirement, Jack was the United States Marshal for the Western District of Texas.
Sadley, Ranger Dean passed away on June 21st, 2022. After his death, firearms from his personal collection were sold and these were part of that collection. According to his family this SAA set was his most prized of his collection.
