Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Essex originally started making their cast frames at their facility in Island Pond, Vermont. They started in the 1970s. They always used 4140 steel (which is good). After that the needed machine work was performed manually on multiple machines with dedicated jigs. They had some problems in their early years. Sometimes it was a casting issue, sometimes a machining issue. Some people have had Essex frames that they couldn't use without extensive work, some dropped right in and have 100,000 round on them. In other words, you either got a good one or a bad one! In their mid to later years at the Island Pond facility these bugs were reportedly corrected. They do have a solid reputation for being very durable, unless of course you got a bad earlier one (the early period lasted a few years!). Unfortunately, some of the retailers that sold Essex frames had so much inventory on hand you could buy a "new" one that was actually an early-production frame, while the product leaving the factory had been improved for several years already.
