Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this incredible single-action revolver today for a penny-start auction, this is the Colt Single Action Army!

While Colt Single Action Army First Generation revolvers—likely only a few dozen—were originally shipped in .38 Special, the vast majority encountered today in this caliber are factory conversions or rebarreled examples. From the late 1920s through the post–World War II era, it became common practice for Single Action Armys to return to Colt for modernization. Less popular chamberings, such as .41 Colt, .38-40, or .32-20, were frequently replaced with new barrels and cylinders in .38 Special. Colt performed many of these conversions using Second Generation barrels and cylinders, leaving distinct clues for identification. Rebarreled models typically bear the caliber on the left side and the address on the right. The original First Generation cylinders are stamped with the last two digits of the serial number—unlike replacement cylinders, which feature the Rampant Colt emblem (like this particular example). For collectors, these factory-converted .38 Special SAAs represent a fascinating chapter in the revolver’s history.

This particular example is one of those convertible and rebarreled models. It features a 1st Generation frame that dates to 1902, along with a barrel that's stamped with the caliber on the left side and the address on the right side. This example also features a Rampant Colt emblem stamp on the cylinder. All of the features are a clear indication that this is one of those converted and rebarreled models.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Single Action Army (also known as the Model P, Peacemaker, M1873, Single Action Army, SAA) is a single-action revolver with a revolving cylinder holding six metallic cartridges. It was designed for the U.S. government service revolver trials of 1873 by Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company, today Colt’s Manufacturing Company, and adopted as the standard military service revolver until 1892. It is perhaps the most copied, fraudulently modified to replicate an original Colt SAA, than any other revolver made. At the beginning of World War II, Colt ceased production of the Single Action Army revolver to devote more time to filling orders for the war. When the war ended, no plans were made to revive the Single Action Army revolver as the design was seen as obsolete. However, the advent of television and Western-themed movies created customer demand for the revolver, so Colt resumed manufacture in 1956 with the Second Generation line of Single Action Army revolvers.
