Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Single Action Army revolver, often referred to as “The Peacemaker,” was first introduced in 1873 and quickly became one of the most iconic firearms in American history. Originally adopted by the U.S. military, the SAA gained legendary status throughout the American West, where it was favored by lawmen, cowboys, and outlaws alike. Its rugged design, balanced feel, and powerful chamberings made it a trusted sidearm through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Over the decades, the SAA has seen several generations of production, with Colt maintaining the original design while offering variations in barrel lengths, finishes, and engraving options to appeal to both working professionals and discerning collectors. This particular Colt Single Action Army stands out as an extraordinary example of the company’s postwar craftsmanship and custom offerings. According to the Colt Factory Letter, this revolver was shipped on November 11, 1971, as part of a one-gun shipment under Colt Factory Order #12172 to Peter’s Gun Shop in Saginaw, Michigan. It left the factory with a nickel finish and Class “B” scroll engraving, both of which are confirmed as original features by Colt’s shipping records. Factory-engraved Single Action Armys are rare in any form, but when paired with verified documentation and a one-of-one shipment, the collectibility and historical value rise substantially. Colt’s factory engraving, especially in styles like Class “B”, was performed by skilled artisans and offered through special-order channels, often resulting in firearms intended for presentation, personal commemoration, or serious collectors. The preserved condition of this revolver, combined with its verified originality and exclusive shipment, makes it an exceptional piece for any advanced Colt collection. It not only represents the enduring legacy of the Single Action Army but also stands as a testament to Colt’s tradition of fine American gunmaking.
