Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Targetsman was introduced in the Third Series of Colt’s renowned rimfire lineup as a more affordable yet still finely made counterpart to the Woodsman Target and Match Target pistols, offering shooters a well-balanced .22 LR handgun with excellent accuracy and Colt’s characteristic build quality. Built on the same general frame pattern as the Woodsman but with simplified features, the Targetsman retained the fixed-barrel blowback design that made Colt’s rimfire autos so inherently precise, and paired it with a light, clean single-action trigger that made it surprisingly capable on the range despite its lower price point. Its 4½-inch or 6-inch barrel options (most commonly the latter) provided a steady sight radius, while its rear sight—adjustable for elevation but fixed for windage—reflected its role as a practical, no-frills target and plinking pistol rather than a fully competition-oriented model. The pistol typically wore Colt’s deep polished bluing and came fitted with molded plastic grips rather than the checkered walnut of its higher-end siblings, but the overall feel remained unmistakably Colt: slim, balanced, and naturally pointing. The Targetsman also featured the magazine safety characteristic of Third Series Colts, along with the streamlined slide profile and squared trigger guard that defined the later-era aesthetic. Although it lacked some refinements of the Match Target or Woodsman Target models, the Colt Targetsman delivered remarkable shooting performance for its category, earning a place in the hands of recreational shooters, beginning competitors, and collectors who appreciate the understated quality and mechanical elegance of Colt’s classic rimfire pistols.
