Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1893, the Foehl & Weeks company was unable to pay its debts, and as a result, the Columbian Firearms Manufacturing Company was formed. The new company was headed by Henry Ruhland, a Philadelphia financier who was also the bankruptcy referee for Foehl & Weeks. Foehl continued to manage the new company, which remained in the same location and used his patents to produce firearms. Essentially, Ruhland and Foehl created a new legal entity that could continue producing firearms without being held liable for the debts of Foehl & Weeks. Later, Ruhland was assigned a 50% interest in two of Foehl's patents (530,759 of 1894 and 554,058 of 1896).
Foehl obtained a patent in 1894 (530,759) for a top-break revolver with an external hammer. This revolver was manufactured for a number of years and sold under different names. The revolver had a T-shaped barrel release lever and a small button on the top strap that allowed the cylinder to be removed. The gun was marked with the following text: "COLUMBIAN F. A. MFG. CO. PHILA. PA. U.S.A. / PAT. DEC. 11.1894 PAT. PDG." It appears that the Columbian company went out of business in 1897.
