Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Competitor Corp. Inc. Competitor pistol, manufactured from 1988 to 2014, was one of the most versatile and customizable single-shot firearms ever produced. Designed as a high-precision, specialty handgun for hunters, silhouette shooters, and long-range enthusiasts, the Competitor distinguished itself with an exceptionally strong rotary-cannon-style action that locked solidly and safely. This robust mechanism allowed the platform to be chambered for an impressive range of more than 400 different calibers, spanning everything from light rimfire cartridges such as .17 LR to large, high-pressure belted magnums and even .50 AE. The standard configuration featured a 14-inch barrel, an adjustable sight system, and a frame engineered to handle extreme cartridge diversity while maintaining reliable accuracy and consistent performance.
Beyond its mechanical strength, the Competitor was known for its user-centered design and broad customization options. It cocked on opening and featured both a dual sliding thumb safety and a trigger safety for secure handling. Shooters could choose between an extractor or rotary-style ejector system, as well as finishes ranging from matte blue to optional electroless nickel for enhanced corrosion resistance. Grip options included synthetic, laminated, and natural wood, all offered in ambidextrous configurations. The combination of durability, modularity, and caliber flexibility made the Competitor a respected alternative to other single-shot precision pistols of its time, such as the Thompson/Center Contender and Remington XP-100. Even after production ended in 2014, the Competitor remains admired among enthusiasts for its engineering innovation, accuracy potential, and unmatched chambering versatility.
