Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Crescent-Davis Arms Corporation Davis Certified Shotgun represents a transitional period in early 20th-century American utility-grade firearms. Crescent Firearms, founded in 1892 in Norwich, Connecticut, became one of the nation’s most prolific producers of private-label and hardware-store shotguns, manufacturing tens of thousands of affordable break-action guns sold under dozens of trade names. In 1930, Crescent merged with Davis-Warner Arms Corporation, forming Crescent-Davis Arms Corporation, which briefly continued production of both Crescent patterns and the earlier Davis “Certified” line. The Davis Certified Shotguns—typically single- or double-barrel models—were marketed as reliable, budget-friendly working guns using simple break-action mechanisms and sturdy steel barrels suitable for the ammunition of the era.

Crescent-Davis produced shotguns only for a short span, from 1930 to approximately 1935, before operations ceased and the assets were later absorbed into Stevens (then part of Savage Arms). As a result, Davis-certified shotguns from this period are relatively uncommon compared to earlier Crescent firearms. Their design remained straightforward and utilitarian, favoring practical function over refinement, which made them popular among farmers, small-game hunters, and rural households needing an affordable, dependable shotgun. Today, these guns are appreciated by collectors for their connection to the intertwined histories of Crescent, Davis, and the later Savage/Stevens lineage, as well as for their role in providing inexpensive yet serviceable firearms during the challenging Depression-era years.
