Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Springfield Armory, Inc., is an American commercial firearms manufacturer and importer located in Geneseo, Illinois. Established in 1974 by Bob Reese and his family, the company is known for producing rifles such as the M1A and importing popular handguns like the XD series and Hellcat. It is important to note that this company is not related to the former Springfield Armory in Massachusetts, which was a manufacturer of U.S. military firearms. Since its inception, the M1911 has been highly customizable. Common aftermarket parts include replacement sights, grips, and various accessories. With the rise of competitive pistol shooting in the 1950s, many companies began offering the M1911 as a base model for extensive modifications. These can range from changing the external finish and checkering the frame to hand-fitting custom hammers, triggers, and sears. Additional enhancements may include the installation of compensators and accessories like tactical lights and scopes. One popular modification to John Browning's design is the use of a full-length guide rod, which adds weight to the front of the pistol but can make disassembly more challenging without improving accuracy. As of 2002, custom M1911s could cost over $1,000 and are often built from scratch or based on existing models. Notable companies that specialize in custom M1911s include Dan Wesson Firearms, Les Baer, Nighthawk Custom, Springfield Custom Shop, and Wilson Combat. IPSC models are also available from manufacturers like BUL Armory and Strayer Voigt Inc (Infinity Firearms).
