Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The CZ 52, also known as the vz. 52 in Czech military designation, was developed in the early 1950s by Jan and Jaroslav Kratochvíl specifically for the Czechoslovak military. Produced by Ceská Zbrojovka in Strakonice, approximately 200,000 units were manufactured between 1952 and 1954. Before adopting the 7.62×25mm vz. 52 as standard, the Czechoslovak military utilized various pistols in different calibers. After three decades of service, the vz. 52 was eventually phased out in favor of the vz. 82 chambered in 9×18mm Makarov.
Technically designated as the vz. 52, the CZ 52 pistol stands apart from the vz. 52 rifle, which was introduced to the export market earlier. It operates using a roller-locked short recoil mechanism, feeding from a detachable box magazine. Originally intended for 9×19mm Parabellum, it was redesigned to accommodate the Soviet 7.62×25mm Tokarev cartridge due to political pressures. Weighing approximately two pounds when unloaded, military versions were finished in parkerized or gray oxide coatings, with some models reblued in the 1970s, clearly marked as such.
Ergonomically, the CZ 52 features a long, slim grip that is narrow from side to side, with a distinctive low "hump" at the rear that fits snugly against the web of the hand. However, its high bore axis contributes to increased felt recoil, distinguishing its handling characteristics
