Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
When French forces occupied the Mauser factory in April 1945, they discovered that the equipment for manufacturing .22 caliber rifles was still intact and operational. At the time, the French military lacked a suitable training rifle, so they commissioned Mauser to design and produce one. The result, approved for production in August 1945, was essentially a Mauser KKW action combined with the detachable magazine of the Mauser 410B and a rear-mounted aperture sight. By June 1946, roughly 10,500 of these rifles—designated the Model 45, which had been produced before manufacturing ceased in anticipation of the demolition of much of the Mauser facility. The remaining tooling and unfinished rifle parts were transferred to the MAS factory, d'Armes de Saint-Étienne, where production resumed. Around 30,000 additional rifles were manufactured there. Designated the MAS-45, these rifles became the standard training weapon for the French military into the 1970s and continued to see limited service well beyond that—some even remain in use today.
