Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Manufacture Nationale d’Armes de Saint-Étienne (MAS) double-barrel shotgun—while MAS was primarily the French government arsenal—is part of a longer tradition of side-by-side firearms crafted in Saint-Étienne prior to World War II. In fact, many of these shotguns were produced between the late 19th century and the 1920s, commonly found in chamberings like 12 or 16 gauge with 65 mm (2½") chambers. The barrels—either Damascus or fluid steel—were crafted by specialists such as Ronchard & Cizeron and proofed locally and in Paris. The appearance of proof marks like “PM” with crown (used 1898–1923) or “PT” (from 1900 onward) confirms that many were made before WWII. Although MAS did manufacture a small batch of civilian shotguns and hunting rifles between 1946 and 1948, the classic side-by-sides carrying traditional proof stamps and artisanal build methods stem from the pre-war era, crafted by independent artisans and sold through civilian outlets or under Manufrance branding.

These shotguns feature break-action, side-by-side barrels (typically 26–30 inches), case-hardened or blued receivers (sometimes engraved), checkered walnut stocks with English grips, dual triggers, sling swivels, and manual safeties—characteristics consistent with turn-of-the-century sporting firearms.
