Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The K5/DP51 series, or the Daewoo Precision Industries K5, is a semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9x19mm. It is produced by SNT Motiv, previously known as S&T Daewoo, in South Korea. The pistol was first introduced in 1989 and features a conventional Browning-type locking system, operating through recoil. It is mainly used by commissioned officers in the South Korean military. The K5 is a small and lightweight pistol that features an unconventional trigger mechanism called "fast action." The pistol frame is composed of forged 7075-T6 aluminum alloy and has a matte anodized finish, while the slide is made of forged 4140 steel and has a matte finish. The weapon's barrel is constructed out of forged 4150 steel and has a length of 4.1 inches with six grooves and a right twist.
The pistol is equipped with a unique "fast action" trigger mechanism that allows you to decock the hammer while keeping the mainspring compressed. The "fast action" mode, also known as Triple Action or Double Action Plus+, combines the trigger travel of the double-action mode and the trigger weight of the single-action mode. This provides a lighter trigger weight for a more accurate first shot while also requiring a longer trigger travel for increased safety. When you pull the trigger lightly, the hammer flicks back, and the pistol switches to the conventional single-action mode. Additionally, the pistol can be fired in the traditional double and single-action modes.
The DP51 pistol comes in two variants: a full-size and a compact variant. The factory double-column type box magazines hold 13 or 15 rounds for the full-size variant and 10 rounds for the compact variant. While Smith & Wesson 59-series magazines are known to be compatible with the DP51, they will protrude slightly. The magazine release is of the push button type. The pistol features three-dot iron sights. The safety system consists of an ambidextrous external safety and a passive firing pin block, which prevents the firing pin from moving forward unless the trigger is pulled. The handgrip panels are made of a single-piece polymer. Various importers, including FirstShot, Inc., Kimber of America, Inc., B-West Imports, Inc., and Davidsons, Inc., marketed the K5 commercially in the United States from the early to late 1990s. The DP51 was the primary version, with a compact variant known as the DP51C and a .40 S&W caliber version called the DH40.
