Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
For much of the 20th century, Colt, Smith & Wesson, and Ruger dominated the American revolver market. However, in 1968, a bold new name emerged: Daniel B. Wesson II. Great-grandson of Smith & Wesson's co-founder, Daniel left the family firm after its acquisition by Bangor Punta and founded Dan Wesson Arms in Monson, Massachusetts. Determined to blend traditional craftsmanship with innovative design, he partnered with renowned firearms designer Karl R. Lewis, who introduced a revolutionary concept: an interchangeable barrel system that allowed shooters to swap barrel lengths and shrouds with ease. The first production models, the 11 and 12, were shipped in August 1970. These early revolvers featured distinctive "pork chop" barrel shrouds and external barrel nuts. In 1971, Dan Wesson introduced the refined Model 14 (fixed sights) and Model 15 (adjustable sights) in .357 Magnum caliber. These models maintained Lewis's modular system, offering a degree of flexibility that no other revolver maker provided at the time.

In 1975, Dan Wesson introduced the redesigned 14-2 and 15-2 series. These models replaced the bulky "pork chop" shroud with a sleeker barrel assembly, improving strength, balance, and alignment. This second generation solidified Dan Wesson's reputation for accuracy and durability, making the guns especially popular with handgun silhouette shooters. Today, the Model 14, 15, and their later variants remain highly regarded for their groundbreaking engineering and for challenging the revolver establishment of their era.
