Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In late 1980, after three years of development, Dan Wesson launched the Model 44, a large-framed revolver chambered in .44 Magnum/Special, designed specifically for hunters and target shooters, particularly those engaged in metal plate or silhouette competitions. Engineered for prolonged use with full-power magnum loads, the Model 44 featured a robust frame that surpassed the strength of its contemporary, the Smith & Wesson Model 29. Weighing 48 ounces with a 4-inch barrel, the Model 44 boasted a solid one-piece frame without a separate side plate, enhancing its durability and strength. Its design also incorporated advanced features aimed at improving accuracy, such as broached rifling and choke-bored barrels.

The Model 44 was initially available with interchangeable barrel and shroud options in 4", 6", 8", or 10" lengths, with the 6-inch barrel being the most common. A 2 1/2" barrel/shroud was later introduced as a factory option. Similar to the Model 15-2, it could be customized with various shroud configurations, including partial or full lug designs with either solid or ventilated ribs. An innovative "Power Control" barrel compensator was also offered, featuring radial ports at the muzzle and top vents in the shroud to reduce recoil. Although this compensator improved shooting comfort, it precluded the use of cast lead bullets due to lead and carbon buildup. At the time, the Model 44 was noted for having the lightest recoil of any .44 Magnum revolver, a feature particularly advantageous in IHMSA silhouette competitions. Its combination of inherent accuracy, excellent trigger, and rapid lock time quickly made the Model 44 popular in heavy-caliber revolver competitions, as well as among hunters and sportsmen seeking a reliable firearm for protection against large predators. Though the Power Control barrel and vented shroud were eventually discontinued, Dan Wesson continued to innovate with an external shroud-mounted compensator in later models.

In the subsequent years, Dan Wesson expanded their Large Frame revolver line to include other calibers, such as the .41 Magnum (Model 41) and .45 Long Colt (Model 45), with stainless steel variants designated with a 7-prefix (e.g., Model 715, 744, 745, 746, etc.).
