Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Dan Wesson Arms was established in 1968 by Daniel B. Wesson II, who was the great-grandson of Daniel B. Wesson I, the co-founder of Smith and Wesson in 1856. The company's first production revolvers were designed by Karl R. Lewis based on a modular concept, which enabled quick and easy replacement of barrels of varying lengths. Dan Wesson revolvers were usually sold as kits with multiple barrels that could be swapped without the need for specialized equipment.
In the 1970s, Dan Wesson collaborated with Elgin Gates to develop several high-powered magnum handgun cartridges for use in their revolvers. These included the .357 SuperMag (also known as .357 Maximum), .375 SuperMag, .445 SuperMag, and later the .414 SuperMag. These cartridges were developed for long-range metallic silhouette shooting, a popular sport that requires high-energy cartridges to knock over steel plates at extreme ranges, particularly for handguns.
This is the Model 740 SuperMag and is chambered in .357 Maximum/SuperMag cartridge. This cartridge was created by lengthening a .357 Magnum case by 5/16 inches and using a much higher volume of slow-burning powder with small rifle primers. This produces approximately double the muzzle energy of the parent .357 Magnum and roughly equal energy to the .44 Magnum, with a lighter, faster bullet. A typical .357 Maximum load can achieve a muzzle velocity of 2000 ft/s with a 158-grain bullet, while a .357 Magnum load of the same weight from the same barrel length will only reach about 1400 ft/s. Guns chambered in .357 Maximum can also fire the shorter .357 Magnum and .38 Special cartridges.
Return Policy:
We gladly offer a 3 day unfired inspection policy from the time that the firearm is delivered to your FFL. Refunds are available for all qualifying orders.
