When it comes to revolvers in the US, the “Big Three” of Colt, Smith and Wesson, and Ruger remain strong. However, in the 1970s, a new company emerged and attempted to challenge these three (Smith in particular) with an innovative new design. This company was Dan Wesson, and the Model 15 was that design. Founded in 1968 by Daniel B. Wesson II after the acquisition of his family company by conglomerate Bangor Punta, Wesson sought to create a company to continue the tradition of innovative, high-quality revolvers while also maintaining his independence and family legacy. For this, he knew he would need a designer and ended up finding just the man in an unlikely place. The Dan Wesson 22-V (often written 22V or Model 22) is a heavy, accuracy-focused .22 LR revolver built on a beefy Dan Wesson frame and notable for its interchangeable barrel/shroud system and target-oriented features. Unlike most rimfire handguns it was engineered more like a scaled-down magnum-frame revolver—using substantial mass, good sights (adjustable rear and interchangeable front inserts) and a very solid lockup—to produce outstanding practical accuracy for a rimfire. Many examples were offered as “Pistol-Pac” sets with multiple barrel lengths (2.5", 4", 6", 8", even 10" in some kits) and ventilated or solid ribs, which makes the platform unusually versatile. Historically the 22V line sits with Dan Wesson’s tradition of modular, high-quality revolvers produced in Monson/Palmer, Massachusetts; the design evolved alongside the company’s larger-bore interchangeable-barrel guns (the 15-series/15-2 family) and shares the same emphasis on tight barrel-to-shroud fit and easily swappable front ends. Production runs and naming varied over the years (you’ll see Model 22, 22VH, 22V and vendor-pack/“Pistol Pac” listings), and most surviving examples date from the 1970s–1990s era when Dan Wesson offered multi-barrel kits and premium target configuration options.
