Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ortgies pistol was an innovative hammerless semi-automatic firearm developed in post-World War I Germany by Heinrich Ortgies and later produced by Deutsche Werke. Known for its affordability and quality, it gained popularity in shooting competitions and was widely exported to the Americas. This pistol was available in 6.35 mm, 7.65 mm, and 9 mm Kurz variants, all utilizing a blowback operating mechanism. Its design was notable for having relatively few parts and being well-sealed against dirt, enhancing reliability. The metal components were either forged or machined, and the assembly process minimized the use of screws. Notably, the wooden grips were secured with a spring-loaded metal fastener inside the magazine well, although some models used a single screw. The hammerless action featured a spring-loaded striker that not only fired the cartridge but also functioned as an ejector when the slide moved back after firing. This design was reminiscent of early Colt and Browning pocket pistols, showcasing advanced engineering for its time.
