The FN FAL, which stands for Fusil Automatique Léger (French) or Light Automatic Rifle (English), is a battle rifle that was designed in Belgium in 1953 by Dieudonné Saive and manufactured by FN Herstal. During the Cold War, the FAL was widely adopted by many countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), though it was not adopted by the United States. It is one of the most widely used rifles in history, having been used by more than 90 countries. Due to its popularity, it has been given the title "the right arm of the free world" by many self-proclaimed free world countries.
An American company known as DSA (David Selvaggio Arms) produces a copy of the FAL that's called the FAL DSA SA58 FAL. This rifle is chambered in the same 7.62x51mm Nato cartridge as the original FAL. The DSA SA58 was manufactured using the same Steyr-Daimler-Puch production line equipment that was used for the StG-58. The rifle is available in several barrel lengths, including 16 inches, 18 inches, and 21 inches. It also comes equipped with two different types of stocks, either Glass-filled Nylon furniture or wood furniture.
Civilian customers are limited to a semi-automatic configuration, while military and law enforcement clients can procure select-fire configurations that can fire in full auto with a cyclic rate of fire of around 650–750 rounds per minute. The SA58 FAL can use any metric-measurement FAL magazines, which come in 5, 10, 20, or 30-round capacities.
